Booking tips for travellers from Kenya
When to book, documents, JKIA, baggage and paying with M-Pesa.
When to book
- Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps, and earlier for the busy seasons — December to January and July to August.
- Mid-week departures are often cheaper than weekends. If your dates can move, compare a day or two either side.
Passport and visa
- Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you travel and have blank pages. Schengen countries need it valid at least 3 months after you leave.
- Apply early for any visa your destination needs — ask our agents if you're unsure what you need.
- Type every name exactly as it appears on the passport or ID the traveller will use.
At JKIA
- Arrive 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic ones.
- Check in online when your airline opens it — often 24 to 48 hours before departure — and check your terminal on your itinerary.
Baggage
- Your allowance depends on the airline and the fare. It is shown on each flight before you book, and in your confirmation.
- Keep medicines, travel documents and valuables in your hand luggage, and check your airline's rules for liquids and prohibited items.
Paying for your flight
- Pay with M-Pesa in Kenyan shillings: you approve the prompt on your phone with your PIN.
- Not ready to pay it all? Hold your seats with the KES 999 reservation fee (non-refundable, for a few hours, subject to availability) and an agent agrees the balance with you. A fare priced in another currency can be held the same way.
